The 2010-2011 Pilot, Not Just Another, just won their first Gold Crown award in Redondo’s history. The Gold Crown is the top award that a publication can achieve, and The Pilot has been on the list the last seven out of nine years. This is a huge accomplishment for the yearbook and its staff. Congratulations to the RUHS Jazz Band for thier first place finish at the Westlake Jazz Festival. Special recognition was given to Trombone Soloist Clay Attig for being the top soloist in our division. Come see the band perform on Friday, June 1st at 630pm on the RUHS Auditorium Lawn at our annual Jazz Under the Stars concert.
Congratulations to our 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program recipients!!! Due to outstanding PSAT scores, these students are being recognized as the top 50,000 of about 1.5 million entrants. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services had a Junior Duck Stamp art contest and RUHS student “Miriam” Hyun Wang was selected as the finalist for California (out of 3500 entries). Miriam won third place in the national competition and a $2000 monetary prize. Her work can be seen at http://www.fws.gov/juniorduck/. Proceeds from sales of the Junior Duck Stamp -- which the Service sells for $5 -- support environmental education.
Congratulations to these students for their outstanding accomplishment for beign slected as a Gates Millennium Scholar! Ciara Diaz, Daniel Garzon, Joy Ohiomoba, and Sameer Siddiqui have been selected as one of 1,000 Gates Millenium Scholars nationwide out of more than 24,000 students who applied. Strong leadership, community service and academic achievements contributed to their selection as a Gates Millennium Scholar. This scholarship award will provide funding for their education at any college or university of their choice for four years. In addition, they may be eligible for funding for their education through the master’s and doctoral levels if they choose to study in one of the seven graduate disciplines: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.
Congratulations to the winners of the Rotary Club Art Contest! First prize of $300 went to Cooper Lovano, Second prize of $200 went to Karissa Taylor, and a $100 third prize went to Janette Kim. They were all treated to a lunch with the Redondo Beach Rotary Club at Blue Water Grill. Way to go, Sea Hawk artists!

Redondo High’s Connor Beatty is the repeat MVP of the SB Surf League for 2011 and 2012. He’ll be honored at the Hermosa Beach Surfer Walk of Fame. It is quite an honor because there are so many great high school surfers in the South Bay.

With a total point spread of 44,865.3 points--2,547 more points than we earned five weeks ago at our regional competition--the RUHS Academic Decathlon team placed 11th out of 65 high schools at state this weekend. This is a phenomenal best finish ever for our school at state! Christopher Lew earned bronze medals in Economics and Essay, as well as a gold medal for being our top scoring decathlete. And Aamil Shaik earned a bronze medal in Physics--our science topic for this year. Chris Lew and Luke Murphy each scored over 8,000 points, which places them in an elite circle of winners. Very few decathletes are able to achieve this!
We are a Division I school, which means our competitors are the schools who continuously (the last 14 years in a row) win the Academic Decathlon title at Nationals. Our decathletes held their own in thisfiercely unsparing division.

Congratulations to the Redondo Varsity Girls 4x800 relay team of Cara Ulizio, Amber Gore, Kayla Ferron and Rachel Bush for their championship victory at the Redondo Nike Invitational Track Meet. They are currently ranked 1st in the state of California and 3rd in the nation!
Prom is June 2nd at the Cooper Building in downtown LA. The theme is Hollywood Land. Prom tickets are on sale starting 4/30 for seniors only at $75/ per person with ASB; $80/per person without ASB. The ASB discounted price may not be transferred to another person. Juniors may purchase tickets beginning 5/3 at $75/$80.
The prices for prom will increase each week as follows:
May 6-11: $80/w ASB; $85/without ASB
May 14-18: $90 w/ ASB $95 /without ASB
May 20-25: $100 w/ ASB; $105 without ASB
May 27- June 1: $110 w/ ASB; $115 without ASB

Want to see your favorite staff members performing on stage?!?! On June 9th, we will have our annual RBUSD Got Talent show (7 – 8:30pm in the RUHS auditorium). Faculty and staff from the entire district will be performing different acts. You will see dancing, singing, acting and much more!
Who is representing the high school? Dr. Wesley will be one of the judges, along with sophomore Caleb Walker. Mr. Bridi, Mr. Brandt and Mr. Genovese will be doing one of the acts, which you do not want to miss. Also, Mr. Soo Hoo and Ms. Fowles will be doing an amazing salsa number.
Last year, the auditorium was packed and tickets sold quickly. Starting Monday, May 7th, tickets will be available at the ASB window in the Administration Building. The cost is $10/ticket – if you would like to use a check, please make it out to Adams ASB. Everyone is invited (students, parents, friends, etc). Don’t wait too long because tickets sell fast!
